Products & Ingredients
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that are required for a healthy body and mind. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) like EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are the most well-researched and well-regarded of essential fatty acids. In 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated that “supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.” In addition to supporting cardiovascular health, Omega-3 fatty acids support cognitive function, eye function, skin health, joint and bone health, and much more.
Our primary source of Omega-3s comes from freshly caught anchovies and sardines from the coastal waters of Peru. We source only from FOS-accredited fisheries.
The American Heart Association recommends 500 mg per day for a person with no history of heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends 1,000 mg per day for a person with a history of heart disease, and 2,000 mg – 4,000 mg of Omega-3 per day for a person with high triglycerides. All OceanBlue products adhere to the recommendations from health authorities like the American Heart Association.
It is rare, but possible to get enough Omega-3s in a normal diet. In the United States, it is likely that you aren’t getting enough of these essential nutrients. In some countries, a normal diet contains enough fish to deliver a healthy amount of Omega-3s. Unfortunately, due to common dietary choices in the U.S., such as consistent heavy consumption of both processed foods and fast foods, most Americans have diets that are deficient in Omega-3s. Not only do they lack essential Omega-3s, but they also tend to be overly rich in pro-inflammatory Omega-6 fatty acids.
Basic nutrition science has demonstrated that Omega-3s are essential nutrients for human health. Health benefits that Omega-3 supports include balanced triglyceride (blood fat) levels, healthy heart and circulatory system, healthy joints, and bones, overall brain health for adults, brain development in children and teens, natural visual function, and healthy mood. The two main Omega-3 fatty acids are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) obtained primarily from fish oil or from cold water fish species, such as herring, sardines, or mackerel. It can also be found in shellfish, seaweed, and certain microalgae. Studies have shown that EPA, and also DHA, help to support a balanced, stable mood. Studies also indicate that EPA is important for cardiovascular health by helping to maintain normal triglyceride levels, and promoting a healthy vascular system.* EPA helps to maintain balance in immune system function and, along with DHA, is vitally important for proper brain development in newborns and young children.
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) found in cold water fish, shellfish, and microalgae. Approximately 40% of the polyunsaturated fatty acids in the brain and 60% in the eye’s retina are DHA. DHA is critically important for proper brain development in newborns and young children and is important for healthy cognitive and neurological function at any age.* DHA has been shown to support the natural function of several physiological systems, including cardiovascular, cognitive, immune, and skeletal.*
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) that is found primarily in vegetable seed oils such as flax seed oil, an excellent plant source of ALA. Because ALA is an essential fatty acid, it is not produced by the body and must be consumed through the diet. The body has the ability to create EPA and DHA from dietary ALA, but it can not do so efficiently. As is the case with EPA and DHA, studies have shown that ALA supports healthy cardiovascular and brain function.*
People choose DHA to support their normal brain, mood, and eye function. DHA is a fundamental building block of tissue in the brain and retina of the eye. It helps with forming neural transmitters, which is important for brain function and the optimal function of the central nervous system.
EPA is an essential nutrient that supports healthy triglyceride (blood fat) levels and healthy levels of inflammation. Additionally, EPA promotes optimal heart and circulatory function, mood and emotional health, and healthy joints and bones.
Heart health and Omega-3s have been studied for decades, so much so that the FDA now has a qualified health claim stating that the consumption of EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty acids with a healthy diet and exercise may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
People who want the most from an Omega-3 fish oil supplement should target potency, purity, freshness, and quality control, all within a price point they can afford.
When choosing an Omega-3 supplement, it is important to choose a pure form of Omega-3 available to eliminate unwanted fats, fillers, by-products, and toxins. Purity also eliminates the possibility of fishy burps.
American nutritional guidelines recommend that people eat two servings of fatty fish, such as fresh salmon, twice per week.

Pregnancy, Babies & Children
Consult with a healthcare professional before starting any supplement regimen. Research has shown DHA to be vital to the healthy development of your baby’s brain, nervous system, and eyes. While it’s crucial for your baby, it’s also important to maintain your own healthy levels of Omega-3s. DHA and EPA deliver support to every cell, tissue, and organ in your, and your baby’s body. According to Mount Sinai Hospital DHA plays a crucial role in the growth and development of the central nervous system, as well as visual functioning in infants. Breastfed babies with healthy mothers should get enough DHA in breast milk.

DHA fatty acids are important for every cell in the body, but for children, most research has focused on their role in promoting healthy brain development. Children are growing and developing, and during infancy and childhood, DHA is crucial for the healthy development of the brain, eyes, and central nervous system. DHA helps to promote children’s focus, attention, calmness, and social skills. In addition, numerous studies have found that Omega-3s may positively impact children's learning abilities.
