All About Your Skin

What are Omega-3’s?

Omega-3 fatty acids are naturally occurring fats that are mainly found in fish and plants. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is found in plants such as seeds and nuts. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish come in two main types: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosatetraenoic acid (EPA). The cell membrane is a barrier to the outside world. It ensures that nothing harmful enters the body. It also acts as a way for important nutrients and waste to enter and exit the body as needed. Healthy cell membranes also determine the cells ability to hold in water. By holding in more water, skins cells remain plump and vibrant, reducing or slowing down wrinkles. This ability is what is key for skin cells to remain healthy, wrinkle-free, and soft.

 

As we age the cell membrane loses its ability to hold in moisture due to aging and UV damage. EPA is important to skin health as it helps to block the release of natural enzymes that occur from UV light exposure. Over time these enzymes eat away at antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and collagen in the skin. Omega-3’s help to reduce and restore antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, help protect against sun damage, and help to also repair it.

 

The production of inflammatory agents and anti-inflammatory agents in the body are crucial and important to stay in balance. When there is an injury to the skin, it is inflammatory compounds that heal those wounds and send the proper agents to where they need to go. Anti-inflammatory agents are important for removing inflammation once the healing process is done. This imbalance is what leads to inflammation problems. Omega-3’s may help reduce the body’s production of these inflammation compounds and restore balance to these processes.

 


Vitamin D and Skin Cells

Vitamin D like Omega-3 fatty acids is crucial to skin health, the effects of aging, and sun damage. Vitamin D is naturally produced by the skin when exposed to sunlight. Yet, much of the vitamin produced go to other parts of the body rather than the skin. Overexposure to sunlight as mentioned before can accelerate the effects of aging, sunspots, and cancer. Vitamin D in skin cells work in the development and repair of skin cells and the immune system response within them. Too much sunlight exposure can cause skin cancer and abnormal cell growth within the cells, while too little can lead to a vitamin D deficiency. It is important to keep these in balance and to take or apply extra vitamin D to keep the skin soft and wrinkle free while avoiding possible cancers.

 

How to Take and How Much

Omega-3 fatty acids are found naturally occurring sources such as fish and plants. With the proper diet, the right balance can be maintained for what the body needs and requires. They can also be found in lotions and creams that be added physically to the skin and affected areas that you may choose or want to add to. The adequate intake of omega-3 is 1.1 g or 1,100 mg per day for women and 1.6 g or 1,600 mg per day for men to best benefit from their medical properties. Because of this, it can be beneficial to take omega-3 supplements to be able to properly regulate your daily intake and maintain healthy skin.

 

Vitamin D can be taken in two ways depending on where you live and dependent upon the situation or condition. It is important to still allow for approximately 20-30 minutes of sunlight a day for the body to naturally produce vitamin D. In situations where that is not possible, supplements may be taken as designated. A topical lotion may be applied directly to the skin where desired to benefit from the healing effects of vitamin D daily. A lotion-based vitamin D application benefits the skin by directly affecting the area where the skin is dry to restore and repair its softness and resilience.
